Opening plenary of the World of Concrete Europe forum with:
- Michel Virlogeux - Engineer
A graduate of Ecole Polytechnique (1965) and of the French National School od Bridges and Roads (Ponts et Chaussées - 1970), Michel Virlogeux also holds an Engineering Doctorate from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris). He is Head Engineer (retired) of Ponts et Chaussées. Following three years serving in Tunisia, he joined the French highway administration SETRA in 1974. In 1995 he left the French administration to become an independent engineering consultant.
He has designed a large number of major structures: more than 100 bridges including the Normandy Bridge, the Île de Ré Bridge, the Seyssel Bridge over the River Rhone, the Burgundy Bridge at Chalon-sur Saône, the Térénez Bridge over the Aulne, the Jacques Chaban Delmas Bridge in Bordeaux, the Millau viaduct and the Third Bosphorus Bridge with Jean-François Klein.
He has received a number of distinctions, among which: the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering Prize, the Award of Excellence of the Engineering News Record (USA), the Fritz Leonhardt Prize (Germany), the FIB Freyssinet Medal, the AFGC Caquot Award and the Gustave Magnel Medal (Belgium).
He was successively President of the International Federation of Prestressing (FIP) then of Concrete (fib) from 1996 to 2000. He is a member of the French Academy of Technology and of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Michel Virlogeux has also lectured at Ponts et Chaussées for more than 30 years.
