Theme: Use and change in industrial calcium carbonate additives for development of technical mortars and concretes
Calcium carbonate-based additives have been used for many years in construction to optimise the cost-performance ratio of cement -based mixtures such as mortars and concrete. From dry mortar to structural concrete, the engineer formulates calcium carbonate-based admixtures with cements and fillers or other mineral additives to optimise fluidity and viscosity, and reduce the carbon footprint of the mixtures. The new guide published by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) on concrete formulation using calcium carbonate admixtures and other fillers drew inspiration from the European experience by establishing physical and chemical characteristics. This change will allow international firms to locally promote local materials.
Through a new approach, it is evidenced that choosing and using “functional” CC additives in combination with other fillers such as additives with pozzolanic properties can improve the technical, economic and environmental performance of mortars and concretes. Especially in harsh environments, it appears fundamental to consider that CC additives are never used as a substitute for cement but as a “mineral plasticiser” to optimise compactness and durability.
Therefore, for high-performance mixtures, specially-formulated calcium carbonate fines cans be used as a new tool to improve properties such as permeability, stability, colour or mechanical strength.
